If you’re a football fan, you already know why. For those of us who are not, (and I’m not!) let me tell you why. On February 5th, the Pittsburgh Steelers won the Super Bowl. That in itself is great but many other teams have won the Super Bowl before. So what made this Super Bowl more special than other ones? I was half watching the end of it with my husband and half reading a book. But then I heard a big roar and looked up at the television set and I heard the announcer say something like … Finally… It is Bill Cowher’s turn to win the Super Bowl and something to the effect he was the longest standing coach of the same team in the NFL - even if the last time he brought his team to the Super Bowl (and lost) was 10 years ago, in 1995. Well, the word that came to my mind when I heard about their victory was persistence. The next words were trust and faith. Dan Rooney, owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers, could have easily done what many other owners of sports franchises do every year - replace him. But he did not. What Dan Rooney did was trust the man he had put in charge of his team and have faith that the team would be victorious. And, Bill Cowher could have easily given up. Instead, he continued to inspire his team, and I suspect himself, never doubting that they would succeed. How about you? Have you ever doubted that you would be successful? I imagine that like many of us, you too have been doubtful at times. And have you ever trusted fully that whatever you desired would come to you? Again, like many of us, I expect that this has happened to you as well. Now the question is: which way required more effort? If I go by my own experience, I’ll have to admit that it was whenever I doubted myself. I was pouring so much energy into worrying about whether I would be successful, so much energy into asking for reassurance from my husband, and so much wondering if I deserved it that I barely had enough energy to focus and work towards what I wanted to bring into my life. For instance, every phone call to potential clients was rehearsed a hundred times and after the call, analyzed to the smallest detail, wondering if I had said theright thing … may be I should have this or that … The process had lost all the fun and was getting more and more arduous, instead of getting easier. Now if I recall the times that I did not worry whether something would happen or not with, every cell of my body, my mind and soul being in total trust, guess what happened. It came to me effortlessly, with much joy and gratitude. Effortlessly does not mean not doing anything about it or not taking action. It means going with the flow, having this sense of assurance that all is well and that it will happen when it happens. It means not quitting 5 minutes before the miracle happens, as Doreen Virtue says. Just imagine if Bill Cowher had doubted that his players could play well, if he and his team had wondered whether the Steelers were worthy of winning the Super Bowl. Imagine if Dan Rooney, the owner, had not trusted Bill and belittled him. And imagine if he would have fired hishead coach “five minutes before the miracle happened” …. Look at your life and think back to whatever came into your life that you desired. Was it effortless or effortful? Were you in the flow or in doubt? Make a list of the ones that came effortlessly and use the list to remind yourself that you are every bit worthy of receiving what you desire. Which miracle did you give up before it could have happened? The Anatomy of the Spirit: The 7 stages of Power and Healing by Caroline Myss, PHD.
